Food & Water

Food & Hunger

Characters need to eat a number of pounds of food per day in order to maintain their vitality.  The amount of food required is based on the size of the character:

Each day with missed meals requires a CON roll (with a +1 per ¼ of the daily requirement consumed).  If failed, gain a 1-point penalty to all d20 and damage rolls.

It takes two consecutive days of eating sufficient food to remove one point of penalties from hunger.

Overeating provides no bonuses.

Water & Dehydration

The average non-magical waterskin holds four pints of liquid, has a value of 8sp, and weighs five pounds when full (one, when empty).

In most adventuring environments, player characters are assumed to be drinking from their waterskin and refilling from existing water sources.

Player characters should plan ahead when entering deserts, dungeons, or other environments where water may be scarce.

Daily requirements for water depend on the effective temperature (measured in °F) and level of exertion, as seen below.  Amounts are given in pints.

..................Effective Temperature..............

Activity Below 50 50-70 71-90 Above 90

Inactive     5                     6              7                8

Light     6     7     8     10

Moderate     8     9   10     12

Heavy             9                    10            12               16

The above amounts are for medium creatures.  Halve the amount required for small creatures and double for large.

A character has remained inactive during any day when they have spent one hour or less performing significant physical activity. Riding a mount at its normal movement rate, preparing a meal, or engaging in any other sedentary pursuit are allowed. Moving on foot (even at a slow pace), engaging in combat, or performing any Strength-related task are not.

A character has engaged in light activity on any day during which they have spent more than one hour on something other than non-sedentary pursuits.

A character has engaged in moderate activity on any day during which they have spent more than two hours on something other than non-sedentary pursuits.

A character has engaged in heavy activity on any day during which they have spent more than four hours on something other than non-sedentary pursuits.

Each cumulative day with insufficient water intake requires a CON roll (with a +1 per ¼ of the daily requirement drank).  If failed, gain a 5-point penalty to all d20 and damage rolls.

It takes two consecutive days of drinking sufficient water to remove one point of penalties from thirst.
