NRA Chief Range Safety Officers are responsible for training, developing, and supervising NRA Range Safety Officers, developing range standard operating procedures, and facilitating shooting range operations.

NRA Chief Range Safety Officer Courses develop the knowledge, skills, and attitude required to train, develop, and supervise RSOs; develop range standard operating procedures, and facilitate range operations.
The TWO-DAY NRA Chief Range Safety Officer course is presented in two parts: Basic Instructor Training and NRA Chief Range Safety Officer training. Course content includes standard operating procedure development, conducting range safety inspections, developing emergency procedures, how to appropriately address firearm stoppages and malfunctions on the firing line, and conducting safety briefings. CRSO candidates must demonstrate superior teaching and organizational skills, participate in practical exercises, and complete an open book exam. The NRA Chief Range Safety Officer designation is awarded upon successful course completion.
