Mentor Expectations

All mentors must:

• Submit a Volunteer Safety Agreement https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zNF2zr7RRcU3Ia4D3Z3cqL5LGzDPs5hQZn2IObhv_Uo/edit?usp=sharing
• Mentors are expected to follow Sequoia Union School District’s volunteer policies at all team events (whether they are at the school or not). Mentors should conduct themselves professionally and respectfully to set a positive example for the students.

Thank you for your support and participation on our team. We greatly value your time, energy, and expertise. You are positively impacting the lives of many students who share the passion and interest you have that caused you to pursue and remain in your career. FIRST students are set apart from the rest from the first-hand/hands-on experience they receive. They are better equipped to enter college and pursue careers with a wealth of experience behind them. This is made possible because of you. Thank you for all that you contribute to the team; we appreciate it and hope the team rekindles passion in your field.

Mentoring Guidelines

Mentoring on Team 766 should be driven by the following principles:

• We value dedication in our mentors as we do in our students. A mentor who is a consistent presence as part of the team but joined the team with less experience, is preferred over one with superior technical knowledge but can only attend meetings occasionally.
• Our team members are people first, before they are students. We treat them with the respect, trust, and value that they deserve.
• A mentor’s primary goal should be to give students the best experience on the team. This may mean different things with different students or groups of students; we trust our mentors to make their best determination.
• Mentors lead by example - we don’t require anything of the students that we aren’t willing to follow ourselves.
• Whenever appropriate, we maintain transparency with the students.
