Strategic Plan Guidance
ACADEMICS AND HIGH-QUALITY
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
Summer programs are short and provide little time for teachers to plan their lessons. Adopting a set of common, high-quality instructional materials reduces teacher burden, increases the content covered and supports better use of instructional time, and prevents inconsistency (and inequity) in student experiences.
Select HQIM for Reading and Math
Best Practice: Select HQIM for reading and math by the end of January.
ADSY PEP Requirement: There is a district/school-adopted set of instructional materials to be implemented across the LEA’s summer program for reading and math that meet TEA’s standard for High-Quality Instructional Materials in the Decision 8 Assurances. TEA defines High-Quality Instructional Materials as:
Aligned to research-based instructional strategies in the content area
Supports all students in accessing grade-level content
Includes embedded assessments/progress monitoring aligned to the materials
Includes implementation supports that are educative for teachers
Adapt HQIM to your Learners and Context
Best Practice: Engage staff with experience in curriculum and instruction to assess alignment, make adaptations, and identify strategies to support differentiation for students of different skill levels.
Planning Tips
Adapt instructional materials before distributing to teachers so that lesson plans fit the amount of instructional time available, meet student needs, and align to school-year standards.
Provide strategies for differentiation, including materials (lesson plans and activities) for students who need more practice and those who need more advanced material to extend the content.
Organize students in small classes or groups.
