Traveling the Road From Theory to Practice
Developing and implementing my innovation project has been one of the most transformative learning experiences of my career. Writing the Literature Review taught me how to conduct meaningful research and translate theory into practical action, while also showing me how technology can enhance engagement, collaboration, and reflection, key elements of blended learning.
Clarifying my learning philosophy, writing my Learning Manifesto and thinking about A New Culture of Learning helped me understand my “why,” aligning my beliefs with my actions throughout the project. This clarity shaped every decision, from communication, growth mindset, and design to implementation and aligning outcomes, assessment and activities.
Using Fink’s (2003) Taxonomy of Significant Learning guided me in designing experiences rooted in choice, collaboration, and critical reflection. Through the Three-Column Table and UbD Template, I created clear learning goals, activities, and assessments that empower academic coaches to become self-directed leaders.
Experiencing the COVA and CSLE models in the Applied Digital Learning program further reinforced the value of learner ownership and leadership by example. I saw that innovation thrives when individuals have agency and space to grow.
The greatest lesson I’ve learned through this process and creating my Influencer Strategy and 4 Disciplines of Execution (4DX) is that meaningful change takes time. Reflection of my leadership style and collaboration proved essential, helping me become a more empathetic and strategic leader. I also gained a deeper understanding of the power of communication and emotional regulation, how I speak about change and respond to challenges directly shapes how others engage with it. Leading with calm confidence and authenticity has been far more effective than pushing for compliance.

Choosing the Hard That Leads to Growth
The Applied Digital Learning program turned out to be far more than a journey into digital learning, it became a journey into myself. I discovered who I am as a self-directed learner, leader, influencer, creator, communicator and teammate. Along the way, I navigated challenges, breakthroughs, and a full roller coaster of emotions that ultimately made me stronger because I embraced doing hard things. In our final meeting, Dr. Harapnuik reminded me that everything was already within me; now I realize that this program simply gave me the space, guidance, and courage to uncover it and take action.
Take a look at my innovation project update to learn more about my journey. Here's a short video where I explain what I have accomplished so far and my next steps. You will also see work informed by my Influencer and 4DX strategy plan.
I am fulfilling my life’s purpose by helping myself and others grow and succeed. My passion lies in positively impacting student achievement through coaching educational leaders in the area of math. Currently, I serve as a district math coordinator, dedicated to developing strong math leadership. I lead this work through an Online Blended Coaching Strategy designed to support and empower educators. Coaching allows me to guide leaders in creating effective, engaging learning environments. I am especially interested in implementing research-based instructional strategies that drive results. Additionally, I enjoy exploring ways to integrate technology to enhance teaching and learning. This combination of coaching, research, and innovation fuels my commitment to educational excellence. When I discovered the Applied Digital Learning master’s program, I was immediately excited and enrolled. I had no idea how much I would grow. The program has taught me far more than digital learning. It has strengthened my skills in both my personal and professional life.
To everyone who’s been part of this learning journey, thank you! Your support, ideas, encouragement, and occasional “you’ve got this” pep talks made the tough moments easier and the wins even sweeter. I’m grateful for the collaboration, the laughter, and the shared growth. Couldn’t have done it without you! ~Sonia
