Iran to increase cash handouts

Monthly payments to citizens to be boosted by more than 50 per cent as inflation soars and currency depreciates.

Iran is boosting the monthly cash payments it gives to its citizens by more than 50 per cent, the Iranian labour news agency has reported, as soaring inflation and the depreciating rial continue to bite deep into the national economy.

The increase will soon be deposited in recipients' accounts, the head of the organisation for targeted subsidies, Behrouz Moradi, was quoted as saying on Sunday, but cannot be used until the second phase of the government's subsidies plans is launched.

Hong Kong workers to enjoy minimum wage for first time

Hong Kong has introduced a minimum wage that is expected to benefit 270,000 low-paid workers, or around 10% of the working population.

The legislation was passed in response to public pressure to narrow the territory's wealth gap.

But the minimum wage has been resisted by the business community, who say it is too costly.

Business leaders say small businesses will be forced to lay off staff.

"The employers now cannot squeeze the lowest paid sectors of society," said Lee Cheuk-yan, general secretary of the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions and a legislator.

Migrants feel recession aftermath

Migrant workers are suffering worst in the aftermath of the global recession, according to a special report commissioned by the BBC World Service.

Foreign workers in developed nations are more likely to be jobless than their native-born counterparts, as the employment gap widens between the two.

At the same time, immigration to developed countries has slowed sharply.

But despite the job losses among migrant workers, the overall amount they send in remittances to their families back home fell less than expected last year and is expected to bounce back.
