UN launches global action plan to combat scourge of human trafficking
The United Nations today launched a global action plan to combat human trafficking, with senior UN officials urging that governments worldwide take coordinated and consistent measures to try to defeat the scourge.
The plan, launched at a high-level meeting of the General Assembly at UN Headquarters in New York, calls for integrating the fight against human trafficking into the UN’s broader programmes to boost development and strengthen security around the world

Child Migrants: Gordon Brown formally apologises for 'shameful scheme'
Gordon Brown has made a formal apology for Britain sending tens of thousands of children to former colonies where they robbed of their childhood and often suffered terrible abuse.
In a Commons statement the Prime Minister talked of the “shame” that surrounded the child migrants programme.
As part of the fulsome apology he announced the creation of a £6 million compensation fund that will attempt to help those families blighted by the programme which ran from the 1920s to the 1960s.
He told MPs: “To all those former child migrants and their families; to those here with us today and those across the world - to each and every one - I say today we are truly sorry. They were let down.
"We are sorry they were allowed to be sent away when at their most vulnerable. We are sorry that instead of caring for them, this country turned its back.
"We are sorry that the voices of these children were not always heard, their cries for help not always heeded.
"And we are sorry that it has taken so long for this important day to come and for the full and unconditional apology that is justly deserved."
Many of the migrants ended up in orphanages or religious institutions and suffered systematic abuse.
