UN chief urges disarmament forum to start work on fissile material ban treaty

The United Nations Conference on Disarmament (CD), the world’s sole multilateral forum on the issue, must move ahead vigorously on a treaty banning the production of fissile material for nuclear devices or risk slipping into irrelevance, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned today.

“We have collectively done much to move the disarmament agenda forward in recent years,” he told his Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters, which is currently meeting in New York. “But now, we must intensify these efforts or risk the very real possibility of sliding backwards. This is why disarmament and non-proliferation are among my top priorities for 2011.”

Established in 1979, the 65-member CD focuses on cessation of the nuclear arms race and nuclear disarmament, prevention of nuclear war, and prevention of an arms race in outer space. UN Office at Geneva (UNOG) Director-General Sergei Ordzhonikidze is its Secretary-General.

Nuclear debris could reveal clues of bomb's origin

Forensic analysis of the debris left after a nuclear explosion could yield crucial evidence about the composition and the origin of the bomb, say scientists.

A US team examined Trinitite, the glassy ground debris from the first-ever nuclear test that the US Army conducted in 1945 in New Mexico.

They used advanced analytical techniques to reveal details about the materials used to construct the bomb.

The first atomic bomb exploded in the early hours of 16 July, 1945, in the desert near Alamogordo Air Base. Code-named "Trinity", the detonation was just a test conducted far away from any settlements.

Just weeks later, in the final stages of World War II, two atomic bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Between 90,000-166,000 people died in Hiroshima and some 60,000-80,000 in Nagasaki. About half of the deaths happened on the day of the bombing.

Tracing the responsible

Now, many consider the threat of a nuclear attack by terrorists to be very real. Such an attack could potentially wipe out whole cities.

The scientists were surprised to find that their "microanalysis" techniques identified the secondary materials used to build the device that went off at Trinity site.

This information, in turn, can be used to trace the bomb's origin, he said.

"Prior to this study, people didn't realise that other components of the bomb could be discerned from looking at ground debris and seeing what's associated [with it]," said Dr Fahey.

"But there are some distinctive signatures that were in the bomb other than fission products and plutonium, and that gives you hope that you can get some additional information out of it - like where it was made."

Fidel Castro warns of 'nuclear war'

Former Cuban leader says US pressure over Iran's nuclear programme will lead to war, in first public speech since 2006.

Fidel Castro has warned against the dangers of nuclear war in his first public speech since undergoing surgery in 2006.

Castro, 84, said a nuclear conflict was inevitable if the United States, in alliance with Israel, tried to enforce international sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme.

Addressing around 10,000 people, mostly students, at the University of Havana on Friday, he slammed Washington for creating a "system that threatens the survival of humanity".

Nuclear powers set for Pakistan showdown

A row is looming between Beijing and Washington over China's proposed sale of two nuclear power-generating reactors to Pakistan.

This would appear to break the guidelines set by the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), a gathering of countries who export civil nuclear technology

UN talks back conference on nuclear-free Middle East

Nearly 200 nations, signatories of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), have agreed to work towards a nuclear-weapons-free zone in the Middle East.

The members, meeting at the UN in New York, called for a conference in 2012 attended by Middle Eastern states - including Iran - to establish the zone.

The unanimously agreed document also said that Israel should sign the NPT.

UN backs 'nuclear-free' Middle East

The five permanent members of the UN Security Council have said they are committed to making the Middle East a nuclear weapons-free zone, a move which would ultimately force Israel to scrap any nuclear weapons it has.

In a statement in New York on Wednesday, China, France, Russia, the US and UK reaffirmed their backing for a 1995 resolution on the issue.

Indonesia to ratify UN-backed pact banning nuclear testing

Indonesia has announced that it intends to ratify the United Nations-backed treaty banning nuclear testing, pushing the pact one step closer to fruition.

Indonesia’s declaration means the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) needs only eight more ratifications – China, Egypt, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), India, Iran, Israel, Pakistan and the United States – before it can enter into force.

Egypt says nuclear treaty 'a trick'

Middle Eastern countries feel tricked by the 40-year-old nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT), an Egyptian diplomat has warned.

Hisham Badr, Egypt's ambassador to the UN in Geneva, said on Wednesday that there was widespread resentment toward the NPT, which forms the cornerstone of efforts to stop the spread of nuclear weapons.

"There is widespread resentment in the region towards the NPT and what it seeks to achieve, its double standards and lack of political will," the Egyptian envoy said.
