Theresa May: Human rights laws could change for terror fight

Theresa May says she will change human rights laws if they "get in the way" of tackling terror suspects.

She said she wants to do more to restrict the freedom of those posing a threat and to deport foreign suspects.

The UK could seek opt-outs from the European Convention on Human Rights, which it has abided by since 1953.

Labour said the UK would not defeat terrorism "by ripping up basic rights". The Lib Dems said it was a "cynical" move ahead of Thursday's election.

Jeremy Corbyn links foreign policy to growing terror threat

The longtime peace campaigner and former chair of the Stop the War coalition will also argue that it is the responsibility of government to ensure that “our foreign policy reduces rather than increases the threat to this country”.

Corbyn will say: “Many experts, including professionals in our intelligence and security services, have pointed to the connections between wars our government has supported or fought in other countries and terrorism here at home.

British Spy Chief Breaks Agency's History of Silence

John Sawers delivers speech, a first by a serving MI6 head; says terrorism is a focus and torture is anathema

In the first public speech by a serving head of the MI6, the U.K.'s foreign spy agency, Sir John Sawers said fighting terrorism is the agency's top focus and condemned the use of torture in gathering intelligence.

"The most draining aspect of my job is reading, every day, intelligence reports describing the plotting of terrorists who are bent on maiming and murdering people in this country," Sir John told the Society of Editors here, in a televised address.

He said more than a third of MI6's resources were directed at counterterrorism—the first time the agency had publicly given even that scant detail about resources.

Iraq inquiry: Ex-MI5 boss says war raised terror threat

The invasion of Iraq "substantially" increased the terrorist threat to the UK, the former head of MI5 has said.

Baroness Manningham-Buller told the Iraq inquiry the war "radicalised" young people, including UK citizens, who saw it "as an attack on Islam".

As a result, she said, she was not surprised that UK nationals were involved in the 7/7 bombings in London.

She also said she believed intelligence on Iraq's threat was not "substantial enough" to justify the war.

Describing the intelligence on Iraq's weapons threat as "fragmentary", she said. "If you are going to go to war, you need to have a pretty high threshold to decide on that."

British admit using 'embarrassing' fake rock to spy on Russians

A former British official says Vladimir Putin used the fake rock spying incident in 2006 for political gains. Another official links it to a killing.

Calling the espionage episode "embarrassing," a former British government official has admitted that a fake rock discovered by the Russian security service in a Moscow park in 2006 concealed a communications device planted by British spies.

"They had us bang to rights," Jonathan Powell, the chief of staff to former Prime Minister Tony Blair, says in a BBC documentary, using a British expression for being caught red-handed. "Clearly, they had known about it for some time and had been saving it up for a political purpose."
