First Person: Aboriginal Australians suffer from ‘violent history’ and ongoing ‘institutional racism’

The racist double standards of international development

The claim that we are making 'wonderful progress' against global poverty is a fallacy based on a colonial mindset.

The US commits the same abuses it condemns abroad

In its response to the George Floyd protests, the US failed to meet the standards that it demands of other countries.

The credibility of those actions, or what was left of it, now lies in ashes. Over the past three weeks, police across the United States have unleashed some of the same tactics against peaceful protesters at home that the US has condemned abroad. No matter what distinctions the current administration might try to draw, the ability of the US to promote respect for human rights abroad has been further harmed.

Xenophobic Attitudes in Russia Are Growing, but Are Unlikely to Lead to Large-Scale Ethnic Conflicts

Ethnic tension in Russia remains a serious problem, if a recent poll conducted by the Public Opinion Foundation (FOM) is anything to go by. It found that 76 percent of Muscovites and 66 percent of residents of the Central Federal District believe that the authorities should limit the number of non-Russians who can enter their districts. Most Muscovites also think that the relationship between people of different nationalities in the Russian capital is bad, and a third said they have negative feelings toward newcomers. But despite the hard feelings, experts say dramatic growth in the number of ethnic conflicts is unlikely.

At UN, educators learn ways to impart lessons of slavery to future generations

From high schools in the Gambia and Portugal to pre-schools in South Africa and a university in the United States, hundreds of teachers and educators from around the world gathered “virtually” today through the assistance of the United Nations to learn about the best ways to teach future generations about slavery.

The one-day video conference, which brought together around 450 people at seven different sites worldwide, gave participants the opportunity to exchange the latest ideas, successes and strategies for teaching the subject at all levels of the education system.

US discriminates on right to safe water and sanitation, says UN expert

The United States must do more to eliminate discrimination in access to safe drinking water and sanitation, an independent United Nations expert reported today, citing wide disparities that adversely affect people of colour and Native Americans.

“I am concerned that several laws, policies and practices, while appearing neutral at face value, have a disproportionate impact on the enjoyment of human rights by certain groups,”said UN independent expert Catarina de Albuquerque, who is mandated by the UN Human Rights Council to examine human rights obligations for access to safe drinking water and sanitation.

More Black Newswomen Break Ranks And Go “Natural”

I was tired of the time and money that went into maintaining the look. In an impulsive instant I made the decision to “go natural,” and it continues to be one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life.

It takes guts to wear kinky hair in the television news biz, an industry that fawns over “the look.” So last week, I was overjoyed when I saw another fellow broadcaster take the plunge.

Miami Police Are Using Jay-Z’s Image To Depict Gang Member

Even though Jay-Z may be having lunch with Warren Buffet and is one of the richest most powerful men in the world, the Miami police still believe that his image is what they use to depict a thug.

Jay-Z hasn’t had the most notable past but he has come one hell of a way from selling drugs on the corner. Obviously Miami doesn’t care.

Obama: “People Don’t Feel I’ve Changed Washington”

President Obama conceded recently that his campaign message of changing the way Washington works is not viewed by the nation as a fulfilled goal.

Asked in an interview by Colorado’s 9NEWS to judge his ability in the first two years of his presidency to alter what has long been characterized as a Washington that is broken, Obama admitted that people saw progress as minimal, but said that he had actually made some ground on the issue.

“I don’t think there’s a sense that I’ve been successful, I think that people feel that Washington still is dysfunctional,” Obama said, before challenging that sentiment. “We’ve actually made some improvement, mainly in areas where I’ve got complete control.”

Obama explained that he had taken measures to make the White House more transparent, improve the flow of information to the American people, and cut down on lobbyist influence on his administration, but that actually repairing Washington in the way people wanted to see it fixed would take a more concerted effort in the next two years.
