Al-Zawahiri named new al-Qaeda chief

Group's second-in-command appointed leader following killing of Osama bin Laden.

"The general command of al-Qaeda announces, after consultations, the appointment of Sheikh Ayman al-Zawahiri as head of the group," the statement, posted online on Thursday, said.

US special forces killed bin Laden in a raid on the Pakistani city of Abbottabad on May 2.

Al-Qaeda under the new leadership of al-Zawahiri will pursue its fight against the US and Israel, the group said in the statement.

"We seek with the aid of God to call for the religion of truth and incite our nation to fight ... by carrying out jihad against the apostate invaders ... with their head being crusader America and its servant Israel, and whoever supports them," it said.

Al-Zawahiri appeared in a white Arab robe and turban, a Kalashnikov at his side, in a 28-minute video posted on jihadist online forums on Wednesday.

"We will pursue the jihad until we expel the invaders from Muslim lands," he was quoted as saying in the video titled "The Noble Knight Dismounted".

Occupation of Arab territories stifles economic growth – UN report

Employment and economic conditions in the occupied Arab territories continue to be stifled by restrictions imposed under Israel’s occupation and the policy of separation, according to a report by the United Nations International Labour Organisation (ILO).

The annual report of ILO on the situation of workers of the occupied Arab territories released last week calls for replacing the current security logic “with a development logic, based on a long-term vision of the economic, employment and human security interests of all the women and men in the region.”

Fighting terrorism requires more than just killing Bin Laden

The killing of Osama Ben Laden might help to put a closure for the thousands of families who lost their loved ones to al Qaeda, and represents a major symbolic victory for governments waging the so called “War on Terror”, however it will not put an end the ideology of terror and violence in the world unless its real reasons are addressed.

The elusive definition of terrorism has been further complicated by failure of the US War on “terror” to make a distinction between legitimate military operations against occupation, and terrorism, which further complicated the relations between the West and the Muslim world. Furthermore, and as a result of the 9/11 attacks, the Western politicians and the media attempted to link Islam to terrorism, consequently Islamophobia has swept through the West, putting the life of many Muslims at danger by hate crimes often condoned by governments’ actions.

Moreover, global counterterrorism was directed against non-state actors such as alQaeda, while ignoring the main perpetrator of state terrorism committed by daily Israeli occupation forces against innocent Palestinians in the occupied territories in violation of International Law, UN resolutions, and outside the boundaries of laws of armed conflict.

It’s illogical to separate between terrorism and the violence directed at US and its interests in the region, and its foreign policies and its support to Israel and autocratic regimes in the Middle East and its disregard to the interests and rights of other nations in order to achieve peace and prosperity to its own people. To continue such policies, the US is risking its relations with the Muslim world, and keeping the door open for many other Ben Ladens to emerge, and the cycle of violence will never end.

MB: Bin Laden is not Islam and resistance against oppression is legitimate

According to a statement issued by Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood while Islam denounces violence and terrorism it believes it was not necessary to resort to assassination stressing a fair trial of any criminal whatever the crime would have sufficed.

It is on this note that the MB calls on the Western world, its people and governments to not link Islam with terrorism, and to correct the erroneous image which has been created in this regard.

Ending its statement the group cites that so long as occupation remains resistance is legitimate and it calls on the United States, NATO and the EU to end the occupation in Afghanistan and Iraq, and recognize the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

Furthermore the MB calls on the US to end its intelligence operations and to cease from interfering in the internal affairs of any Arab or Muslim country.

MB: The US must withdraw its troops from Iraq and Afghanistan

Following the killing of Al-Qaeda leader Ossama Bin Laden during a shootout in Pakistan it is high time the US realize that it must withdraw its troops from Afghanistan and Iraq.

He added that the MB believes it is time for Obama to withdraw forces from Afghanistan and Iraq and end the US and Western forces occupation across the world and Islamic countries which have proved to be damaging and harmful.

Al-Erian maintained that the Arab awakening and revolutions which took place are a clear indication that the region is in no need of foreign intervention.

Al-Erian ascertained it was significant that the media understand and clarify that Al Qaeda did not reflect the teachings of Islam adding that in fact Islam denounces violence and terrorism that is promoted by AlQaeda

France Speaks of Its Resolve In Afghanistan After a Threat

An audio message attributed to Osama bin Laden warned Friday that the fate of French hostages held by Islamic militants would hinge on the withdrawal of French forces from Afghanistan. In response, the French government promptly reaffirmed its commitment to the military mission there.

“We are determined to pursue our action in favor of the Afghan people, with our allies,” Bernard Valero, the Foreign Ministry spokesman, told reporters. About 3,750 French soldiers are stationed in Afghanistan.

'Bin Laden' message harangues US

The message comes just two days after the US marked the eighth anniversary of the 11 September attacks on America.

'No real change'

In the recording, the voice discusses what motivated the al-Qaeda network to launch the 11 September attacks. He explaining that they were, in part, fuelled by US support for Israel.

"The time has come for you to liberate yourselves from fear and the ideological terrorism of neo-conservatives and the Israeli lobby," the voice in the tape says.

"The reason for our dispute with you is your support for your ally Israel, occupying our land in Palestine."

Victory over al Qaeda 'unnecessary,' top British general says

Allied forces in Afghanistan don't have to beat al Qaeda, just contain the terrorist organization, the new chief of Britain's armed forces said in a newspaper interview published Sunday.

Gen. David Richards told the Daily Telegraph that a victory over radical Islamist movements like al Qaeda is "unnecessary and would never be achieved." But they could be contained "to the point that our lives and our children's lives are led securely," Richards said.

Khadr gets 40-year prison sentence

Canadian citizen and former child soldier will serve only eight more years under plea bargain.

A former child soldier in Guantanamo Bay has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for killing an American solider on an Afghan battlefield.

But Omar Khadr will only serve eight years as a result of a plea bargain struck with the US military tribunal trying him.

Guilty plea

Khadr pleaded guilty to killing the soldier when he was 15, along with other terrorism charges, in exchange for an assurance that his sentence would be capped at eight years.

Interrogator warned Khadr of gang rape threat

Omar Khadr's sentencing hearing was adjourned unexpectedly Friday, after jurors heard how an American interrogator threatened him with gang rape.

According to the unsworn statement read by Khadr's defence lawyer Lt. Col. Jon Jackson, the incident occurred when the then-15-year-old was first taken to Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan in 2002.

"It is hard for me to talk about," Canadian-born Khadr said in the statement. "I know it does not change what I did, but I hope you will think about it when you punish me."

The statement echoes testimony by former Sgt. Joshua Claus lst who admitted telling Khadr about a young Muslim boy who was sent to a U.S. prison where "big black guys" gang raped him, possibly to death. In return for his testimony, Claus was given immunity from prosecution for any possible abuse of Khadr. Claus was nevertheless court-martialled and discharged from the army after another badly beaten prisoner died at Bagram in December 2002.

Osama Bin Laden's former cook and driver has become the first Guantanamo detainee to be sentenced since Barack Obama pledged to close the controversial prison camp.
