Maratona Superman 80 Anos, held at Museu da Imagem e do Som in São Paulo on December 15, 2018, was a day-long celebration of one of pop culture’s most enduring icons. Presented as part of the museum’s "Além da Telinha" program, the marathon ran in parallel with the exhibition Quadrinhos, creating a natural bridge between comic-book history and its many audiovisual incarnations.
Across the day, the audience was taken on a chronological journey through Superman’s screen legacy. From the Fleischer Studios animated shorts to episodes of The Adventures of Superman starring George Reeves and later feature films such as Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut and episodes of TV series Lois & Clark, the program revealed how each era reshaped the character while preserving his moral core.
The main guest of the event was Fabio Marques, editor of the long-running website Super-Homem.COM and one of Brazil’s most respected Superman specialists. With clarity and enthusiasm, Marques offered historical context and thoughtful analysis, connecting comic-book mythology with film and television adaptations in a way that was accessible, precise, and deeply informed.
The conversations throughout the marathon were moderated by members of Nova Frota, the Star Trek–focused fan community behind the Além da Telinha program. Fernando Augusto Dias Afonso, Roosevelt Garcia, one of the program’s organizers, and Thiago Maldonado guided the discussions, encouraged audience participation, and kept the tone welcoming and dynamic. Adding to the atmosphere, Thiago A. Maldonado also appeared as a Superman cosplayer, bringing a visual, fan-driven energy that helped turn the event into a shared celebration rather than a formal symposium.
Celebrating 80 years of Superman highlighted why the character has endured since 1938: his adaptability, moral clarity, and ability to speak to different generations without losing his essence.
