Puhekieli

Puhekieli is what nearly everyone in Finland speaks when they don't have to be on their best behavior; i.e., when they're not being a president or a news anchor speaking from a script. The main intent of puhekieli is to make speaking easier by shortening words, using easier sounds, etc. That includes shortening very common words by dropping out the end sounds, kyllä becomes kyll’ (there is a slight glottal stop in the end), mutta becomes mutt', etc. Or changing a difficult diphthong to an easier one like työssä becomes töissä and tuo becomes toi. And of course, our favorite diphthong which by itself expresses admiration, wonder is oi!

• pronouns

  • se → hän, ne → he

  • tämä → tää, nämä → nää, tuo → toi, nuo → noi

• passive used with pronoun me: me pelataan, me mentiin

• the verb's 3rd person plural and sg are the same : lapset leikkii, pakkaset tulee

• no possessive suffikses: mun kirja, sun vuoro

• some sounds are dropped

  • a- and ä- in front of olla- and ei-: meil on, mul ei

  • i- drops out after an s- : tulis, suureks

  • i-drops out in unstressed diphtongs: punanen, antas ('antaisi')

  • n-sound in the end: kaupunkii, sanottii, ollenkaa

  • t-sound in NUT-participles: en oo lukenu, oon ihaillu

Additional common puhekieli features:

• minä → mä ~ mää, sinä → sä ~ sää

• -ea- ja -eä-difthongs → ee, oa → oo, öä → öö , mäkeä → mäkee, ainoa → ainoo, lämpöä → lämpöö

• shortening of -ma-an form: menen lukemaan → menen lukee(n), opin kirjottamaa(n) → opin kirjoittaa(n)

• -d- drops: kahdeksan → kaheksan, odottaa → oottaa, tehdä → tehä

• -ts-sound → tt tai t: katsottiin → katottiin telkkaa, eksyin metsään → eksyin mettään
