Student Behavior Support Guidelines
You have many levels of support. If you have an issue in a class, you can contact your teacher. If the issue is about your emotional and social well being then you have a counselor. If there is an issue around your behaviour, it will likely be handled by the Year Head in the first case. We also have a learning support department to assist children with learning issues. The role of the 9 -12 Principals is to see that students are learning in a healthy, safe environment.
The 9 - 12 Principal, Year Head and Counselors for each grade meet once every eight days to discuss academic, social and behavioural issues in the grade level. We then decide who is the most appropriate person to deal with the issue. If the issue is smaller, then parents may not be contacted right away, so that students can develop their independence in resolving challenges. If the issue is more serious or is repeated, then parents will be contacted.
If the issue cannot be resolved, then a variety of actions may be needed. These might include counselling, parent conferences, a detention, or for more serious issues suspension from school. Suspensions are very rare, as the behaviour at FIS is generally excellent, and most problems can be solved through conversation.
Please know that any support for your behaviour and any consequences are handled privately. It is best for all involved if we have a strong partnership with your parents, so that we can support each other. It is also helpful if we only share our comments and opinions within the family/school partnership and not with other families or students. This can cause situations to become more serious than necessary and can put additional stress on the children. We take all children’s learning and the environment that supports this learning seriously.
