Here I have uploaded a presentation I completed on Rett Syndrome. In my observation, I met a student with Rett Syndrome, and I decided to educate myself and my classmates a little more about this disability. This power point was presented because in my Introduction to Exceptional Children class, we each took on a disability to research and present to the class. I felt a connection with Rett Syndrome since I was observing a student who had this.
This presentation and paper assisted me in learning more about a disability that is rare, yet I met an individual with it. Being able to educate not only myself, but my classmates as well was rewarding. This was one of my first education moments where I felt like a teacher, teaching my class. My fellow classmates were my students and we were all learning together. Because I observed this specific disability in the classroom, I was able to recognize and relate this to Standard 1C. It states, "understands how teaching and student learning are influenced by development (physical, social and emotional, cognitive, linguistic), past experiences, talents, prior knowledge, economic circumstances and diversity within the community".
This artifact connects to my future classroom because as a specials teacher, I will get to create relationships with every student in the school, not just a specific group of students assigned to my classroom. I will be adapting and modifying PE lesson plans for my entire career. Being able to adjust a lesson plan such as this one was a great way to practice for my future and is a great reference tool to keep in my back pocket.
This document is from an assignment in my "Equity and Access forLearning & Life" class with my professor, Dr. Dieter. During this class, we had a lot of time to reflect on our own experiences and upbringings. This led me to realize that I want to immerse myself in more diversity and continue educating myself on the world around me. I chose to upload this reflection because it was a defining moment for my teaching career.
The above assignment is important to showcase because I was introduced to these books as education materials for myself. Reading "Hood Feminism" began to open my eyes to a world that was unknown to me, yet I wanted to know more. My student teaching experience took place in Chicago Public Schools, and I was able to relate my teaching experiences to standard 1E, "understands the impact of linguistic and cultural diversity on learning and communication". Spending time in a city school and really getting to see a variety of students from numerous different religions and backgrounds has assisted in educating me on the diversity all around.
This artifact is a great resource for me because it reminds me why I wanted to become a teacher. I want to provide education to students from all diverse backgrounds and abilities. I continue to educate myself and gain first-hand experience as my teaching career progresses. I plan on continuing my career in Chicago Public Schools, so this will connect to my future classroom because I will be met with plenty of diversity in my teachings.
