This is a book that I decided to bring in for my kindergarteners at the beginning of the school year called "The Gym Teacher From The Black Lagoon". Something that I knew but never thought too in-depth about was how kindergarteners are experiencing a full day 5 day a week school experience that is brand-new to them. It is their first time away from their adult this long, and can probably be an overwhelming experience for them. This book is a fun way to introduce full-time physical education to them.
Using this book with the new young students relates to standard 3E, "understands the appropriate role of technology, including assistive technology, to address student needs, as well as how to incorporate contemporary tools and resources to maximize student learning". Creating an appropriate environment for the new students is essential in creating a welcoming environment for them. Being able to slow down as a PE teacher and read a book about our job instead is a great use of using other tools for kindergarten cross-curriculum.
This type of lesson is important to my development as a teacher because it allows me to think outside the box and make my students comfortable. These students are 5 years old, and they are adjusting to a very new experience. I wanted to provide a calm and comfortable space for them to adjust and have fun while learning. This was important because even though my content area is physical education, I am able to use tools from a regular classroom to help transition students into the gym. I am teaching the new students that even though the gym is a place where we play fun games, there is stull structure necessary.
I have posted a lesson plan that I adapted from a more detailed game called "Catch A Shooting Star". This lesson plan is for game called "Garbage in the Backyard", and is a simplified version of PE game involving gator balls.
Throughout my time spent in my student teaching placement, I have learned to adjust and modify games / activities last minute. This modification was created to give the younger, less athletically developed students the opportunity to play a fun game. This lesson relates to the standard 3J, "uses data to plan for differentiated instruction to allow for variations in individual learning needs". The younger students had a hard time catching the balls and throwing them all the way across the gym. They were struggling with the physical motion of it, so I decided to simplify it and create a new game. After observing the young studnts, I was able to put standard 3M into action. This standard states, "develops plans based on student responses and provides for different pathways based on student needs".
Modifying this lesson plan to meet the needs of the younger less experienced students was beneficial for them. They were not getting frustrated and they were able to practice their skills without the lingering feeling of not being able to complete the activity. In simplifying the origional lesson plan, students were able to spend time enjoying the new game while working on their hand-eye coordination. Many of the students did not even realize they were improving their skills just by having fun. This connects to my teaching style because I am here to teach the students about health and wellness, but I want to do it in a way that they enjoy and will use moving forward.
