This artifact connects to my future classroom because no matter where I plan to teach (whether it is in a big city or a small town), I need to be open and ready to teach a diverse group of students. Being willing to learn with my students and get to know what makes them who they are is what will help me grow into my teaching career. I will always have this to reference when I am teaching in my future classroom, and I hope to add to it as I go.
This first document I have uploaded is my contextual factors paper. I go into detail about my time spent at South Loop Schools, and how they have been shaping me into the teacher I want to be. Working in Chicago Public Schools has been incredibly helpful in teaching me how to be a great teacher. This information is important because it is my first hands on experience teaching in my own classroom with my own students. I really took the time to break down the background information so that I could be fully informed on where my students come from.
Working in a diverse school, I have many students who transfer in from all around the world. I want to be conscious and sensitive to the different cultures and backgrounds that all my students possess. Standard 4L states, "analyzes the classroom environment and makes decisions to enhance cultural and linguistic responsiveness, mutual respect, positive social relationships, student motivation, and classroom engagement". Promoting respect for all individuals and creating an inclusive environment is a top priority in my classroom. All students, staff, and family should feel comfortable participating in activities during school hours.
Using this artifact, I learned that being able to be flexible and think on your toes is a must when it comes to teaching. Every day there may be a student who comes in with an injury or modification need, and I have to be able to produce an activity that is safe and inclusive for everyone. Bringing this into my future classroom will be beneficial because the more practice I get a creating these necessary changes, the better I will become at it.
I chose to upload a reflection I wrote regarding accommodations and modifications in the classroom. As any teacher can tell you, lesson plans do not always go as planned. Sometimes things come up and modifications need to be made. In physical education, this is likely to happen more often than not. Changing up a game last minute, creating an accommodation for a student with a disability, etc.
When creating accommodations and modifications for students, you need to analyze their skills and abilities. Observing and recording notes/data to ensure the best possible changes can be made for them. Standard 4Q focuses on this, and states, "analyzes student behavior data to develop and support positive behavior". Working with other teachers or aids can be beneficial because you can receive input based on how the student reacts to specific changes. In analyzing the student, I am able to progress in this standard and provide positive support needs for any changes that need to be made to the lessons.
