In order to facilitate national agenda in STEM education, Universiti Selangor (Unisel), spearheaded by STEM Unisel, has been actively involved with the National STEM Movement taskforce especially in the Mentor Mentee Project since 2017. Initially, it is a program self-funded by Unisel through the Centre for Community Engagement & Student Movement (COMNET) and the start-up program involved a one-off half day activity with 6 different schools across the northern district of Selangor including Kuala Selangor, Sabak Bernam and Hulu Selangor.
Fortunately, through the kindness of our Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) in 2019 this project could be better coordinated with the funding injected by the minister. The Mentor Mentee MESTECC project worth RM 63,000 involved 10 universities and 21 schools. Further funding was received in 2020, with RM4,000 distributed per school. Both SMK Rantau Panjang and SMK Tiram Jaya have been benefited from this program with 30 students involved for each school in 2019 and later expanded to 70 students per school in 2020-2021. On top of that, up to 38 mentors of Unisel students have been involved in this project with the lecturers play role as the facilitators.
This program is beneficial to the government, universities and schools as the results published in various journal (refer in our publication page) portray the strength of this project. Mentor Mentee model could be implemented in other school and this report could provide relevant input in strategizing future project. Hopefully, this project will be continuously carried out for years to come to encourage students pursuing Science stream. It is essential to equip this future generation with STEM skills as they are the driving force of the nation towards a developed country.
The Mini Theatre STEM programme ends on March 17, 2021, at 3 p.m. The closing ceremony was held on Facebook Live and addressed the keynote speech by Selangor's chief minister, YAB Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari.
It was one of the STEM UNISEL collaborative events with the National Stem Association (NSA). Its objective was to enable students to become more creative and multi-skilled.
