In line with the Malaysian Education Blueprint (2013-2025) as well as the aspiration of the national agenda, STEM education should be integrated in schools to equip the students with creativity and critical thinking which is part of essential STEM skills. This is necessary so that our country will be ready to meet the demand of Industrial Revolution (IR) 4.0 and the VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity) era.
Ominuously, since the past several years, the declining number of students pursuing STEM field are a major concern. This trend is not only observed in Unisel but also at the national level. Hence, STEM Unisel are taking proactive initiatives to promote and cultivate STEM interest towards the schools’ students, with hope that they will eventually pursuing their study in Unisel or any other universities and fill the demand of STEM careers that Malaysia will need to sustain the challenge of IR 4.0 and VUCA era.
Originally spearheaded by Institute of BioIT under the supervision of Prof. Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Abdul Latif Ibrahim (Tokoh Akademik Negara 2012), I was honoured to lead the team since 2016 upon returning from my own journey in the United Kingdom, completing my PhD in the Imperial College London. This journey which inspired me through my times as the science students and intrigued visitors of British Natural History Museum and British Science Museum, both offered various outreach activities that I am trying to implement locally.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to the Unisel STEM Squad, both lecturers and students that are the main drivers of STEM Unisel. My utmost gratitude to the respected authorities, schools, principals, teachers, universities, lecturers and students, who have been working together in or benefitted from our various efforts and events. A special mention to the National STEM Association for their presents throughout this journey. It is a great honour to work with everyone for their extra hours, contributions and supports in this initiative and national STEM agenda as a whole. May the noble cause of STEM movement continue to have passion and enthusiasm of all parties involved. Thank you.
