Roger Hayes

Rev Roger Joseph Hayes Born Ballygowan, Newcastle West, Co Limerick, 2^nd March 1913. His parents were David Hayes (a farmer) and Julia, nee Greene. He was ordained at Waterford Cathedral on 8^th June 1944.

His first post was curate at St Mary's, Douglas to 1946; curate Holy Cross, St Helens to 1959; curate St Columba, Huyton to 1967; curate St Patrick, Southport to 1970,

Father Hayes was Parish Priest at St Cuthbert from 1970. The school log book notes that he was inducted as Parish Priest on 7th July that year.

He lived alone in the presbytery from 1976. He was a wide reader and brilliant conversationalist, according to friends. He died on 4^th March 1985 in a severe presbytery fire, which was started by an electric fire.
