Ship Selection 101
Ship Selection 101
So you have your default ship and you're ready to get a new one. Well, the good news is that early on in the game it doesn't really matter what one you pick as you'll be able to proceed with the story. However, you will find that picking on looks or nostalgia can put you into a corner you had not thought of and don't want. An example, you want to play a ship that can take a beating? Well, then you want a ship that has more than 1 Engineering Bridge station. You want to be a damage dealer? Have more than 1 Tactical station. Science-based plan? Better have more than 1 science station.
This can also be a reflection on the crew you have available to you. As new Bridge Officers are offered, you might want a plan as to what to take and when to make sure you are not left with an open slot you can't fill. Or have too many of 1 type that is left without a station. So what to do? Here is a breakdown of the ships early on and what stations they have to get the most out of your existing (and planned) crew for the role you want to play.
Note that Tactical Captains are wise to choose ships that focus on the number of Tactical Stations and Officers. For most players, you will only have 5 stations for bridge officers. At most your ship will only have 2-3 Tactical Stations, 1-2 Science and Engineering stations. As such you only need 3 Tactical officers (at most), 2 Science and 2 Engineering officers. The same can be said for Engineering Captains (2-3 Engineering, 1-2 Tactical, 1-2 Science) and Science Captains (2-3 Science, 1-2 Tactical, 1-2 Engineering).

So, you've found the perfect ship. It looks great and it feels like home. But then just as you are settling in, you have to pick a new ship and the old one no longer can be effective in the space combat of the later levelling content. What do you do? Well in some cases, you have options, especially in the later stages to keep the same style but have but with the better stats of the higher level ships.
This is not the case for all styles, sadly. But for some there is a clear upgrade path to go through to keep that style going and have the combat effectiveness too. Here are some paths for those ships that have the same styles at the higher levels.
Sabers saw extensive action in the Dominion War. Two sister ships, the Rapier and the Ushaan classes, were created when Starfleet rapidly expanded ship construction after the outbreak of war with the Klingon Empire.
