Welcome to our Spanish course! We are going to work hard, learn a lot about language and culture, and have fun! I have over 20 years teaching experience and I absolutely love it! Please familiarize yourself with the contents of this course syllabus to help you know what to expect, how to plan, and be more successful in reaching your goals this term. I look forward to getting to know you and please call me Profesora (she, her/s, and ella and su/s).
About This Course
In this class we will build up on the knowledge and skills you acquired in Spanish 101. The language we learn this semester will get increasingly more complex and we will use it to talk about everyday topics such as food, clothing, free time activities, and travel. We will practice the four communicative skills; reading, writing, listening, and speaking in Spanish on a regular basis. Our goal is that by the end of the semester we can communicate in Spanish at the novice-high level. Additionally, we will discuss cultural topics of interest with the goal of developing a deeper understanding of, appreciation for, and connection to the people and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
Learning another language is a transformative experience. You will develop another way of expressing yourself, experiencing the world, and relating to others. It will increase and strengthen your self confidence and self awareness, and be a life changing experience. Yet, it will not be easy, but I promise it will be rewarding. You have an immense potential to learn and my goal is to employ various practices and different tools to guide you in this process. I hope to inspire and assist you in becoming a more independent and brave student who values the challenges and joys of learning a new language. Additionally, I will help you expand your knowledge of the culture and lives of Spanish speakers in order to discover commonalities, but to also create more empathy for and connection to others in our world. To achieve these goals, I will work hard to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where diversity is embraced and valued. You will feel safe to be yourself and you will be surrounded by the care and support of others. You will confidently feel like a vital part of this learning community. Lastly, it is my hope that you will take all of the lessons learned and your newly developed skills out into the world to make a positive impact in the lives of others.
