Thank you for coming to class! Attending our class sessions and fully participating in our activities will provide you with the necessary input, repetition, and application of material being studied in addition to opportunities to get to know your classmates.
In-class participation points will be earned by coming to each class prepared, being on task, and completing a variety of tasks such as taking detailed notes, completing individual, pair, or group activities, in addition to taking pop quizzes. You will earn partial points if you are not on task, if you arrive late and/or leave early. Unfortunately in-class participation points cannot be made up if you are absent.
Attendance: Do your best to come to every scheduled class meeting, arrive on time, and stay for the entire class session. Being tardy (more than 10 minutes late) at the beginning of class, not returning promptly after the break, or leaving class early (more than 10 minutes) will result in a 1/3 absence (not during add/drop period). If you arrive late and leave early, you will be marked absent and receive zero participation points for the entire class session.
Add/Drop Period: Every term I have waitlisted students and new ones (crashers) contacting me to see if there are available spaces. Since you can only add or drop classes during the first two weeks, it is important I know who has decided not to take the course. Please notify me if you are going to be absent so I can save your spot. If you miss a class during the first two weeks and do not notify me by the end of the class session, you will be dropped in order to make room for new students.
Our department attendance policy is that students be dropped after accumulating 10 hours in absences (= 4 in-person classes) in a five unit class before the official withdrawal deadline.
It is your responsibility to drop all classes that you are no longer attending. If you are dropped for excessive absences, your reinstatement into the course is at my discretion.
Instructor notification of your absence total and/or that you're being dropped from the course is a courtesy. Remember, it is your responsibility to be up to date with your tardies and absences.
Approximately every Thursday, class will start with a brief quiz. These mini evaluations are intended to check and see if you are keeping up with studying the material at home so you can come to class prepared to put the content into practice. For these quizzes, you will be allowed to use any handwritten notes you prepared in your notebooks, but no additional resources can be used. These quizzes may not be made up if you arrive late or are absent from class.
