For every chapter covered you will have the opportunity to show off what you have learned in an evaluation. We will complete five this semester and they include three traditional exams and two oral evaluations.
Exams: These in-class evaluations will include vocabulary, grammar, and culture through various types of activities. Also, you will be assessed on your listening, reading, writing skills in addition to your cultural knowledge.
Oral Evaluations: Each and every one of you has the goal of learning how to speak better in Spanish so these evaluations will assess how you are progressing with this skill. You will complete two oral evaluations and they could include but are not limited to answering questions, presenting a dialogue with a classmate, an in-class presentation, etc.
In order to better help you prepare and to reduce assessment-related stress, I will post all instructions and evaluation details in Announcements and the modules ahead of time. Evaluations will take place during our scheduled class meetings and they will receive appropriate feedback.
I was so nervous during our oral evaluation that I froze and I couldn't say anything!
I was sick and missed an exam...can I still complete it and turn it in late for some credit?
Unfortunately there are no early, make-up, or late evaluations, but in the case of any situation that does not permit you to complete one, your lowest chapter evaluation score will be dropped at the end of the term. Whew!
Please note that with the demands of teaching and my other responsibilities, the normal turn-around rate for grading evaluations is one week. I know you are all so excited to see how much you have learned!
At the end of the term you will be showcasing all that you have learned in a comprehensive evaluation which includes the various skills and knowledge we have developed together. This evaluation will include reading, writing, listening, speaking, and cultural topics. I know how stressful final assessments are and when I was in college I would even have multiple finals in one day, yikes. To try and lessen the accumulation of work and the stress at the end of the term, I may divide up the final evaluation and spread it out to make it a bit more manageable for everyone. Additionally, I know some of you may have trips planned or other obligations to tend to at the end of the term, but we will complete this final evaluation in the last two class sessions so you will not want to miss them.
Extra Credit: If you want to improve your progress I encourage you to take advantage of any extra credit opportunities that arise during the semester. Remember, I cannot provide you an opportunity to improve your grade that has not been offered to the entire class. Also, there will not be any additional extra credit opportunities after our last class session.
Final Grades: The grades will be rounded up to the nearest whole percent to give you that little extra bump towards the final grade you really want to earn.
