I approached local photographer, Garry Stacey of Timeless Images, to ask if he could recommend any local videographers who I could contact for possible work experience. Instead, as Stage Manager for the Wayfarer's Pantomime Society, he offered me the opportunity to assist backstage for their production of 'Dick Whittington' at the Brewhouse Theatre, Taunton in January 2024.
Initially, the plan was that I should help the Backstage Crew with the 'Get In', shadow the Lighting and Sound departments over the week, and then help with the 'Get Out' at the end of the run. During the Technical Rehearsal I shadowed the Lighting and Sound guys as planned, making notes for the Follow Spot operators to work from. However, the next day at the Dress Rehearsal, due to Crew absence, I was promoted to 'Stage Right Follow Spot' myself! I proceeded to do this role for most of the performances, and loved it. On the few shows when I was not required on Follow Spot, I assisted with the sound and set, which was really interesting.
I completed 58.5 hours over that week, with the last day being 16 hours long due to there being 3 performances and the 'Get Out', which meant removing all of the sets, props and backdrops.
