With the McMillan Theatre being on the College campus, it is the main venue used by the Performing Arts students for their Performing Arts Showcases and productions. Over the past year I have had the opportunity to film all of their shows, which has been really lovely to do. With my background and knowledge of dance and music, I can understand and feel the beats of the music, enabling me to pick the 'right moment' for a good photograph. This means that I have been repeatedly asked to help out and record these productions, which is really great because I love watching them too!
The Battle of the Bands is an annual event in which all of the College bands compete, and learn how to 'perform' on a stage.
For this specific performance by the band shown below, I was in charge of monitoring the Vision Mixer, so was in control of filming and switching the camera angles to best shoot the band. This meant that the performance was filmed all in one go, and did not require much editing afterwards, as all of the angles had already been changed during the recording. When editing the final piece, the only adjustment I had to make was with the brightness of the clip, as the bassist in the background could not be easily seen against the black curtains in the original video.
This event was an opportunity for the Performing Arts students to showcase what they had been working on so far this year, in front of an audience of their parents and friends. There were many different styles being exhibited, including dance numbers, montages and solo singing performances.
With my interest in dance and music, I had an idea of what angles and shots would be suitable for different movements and moments. My camera was stationed Stage Left and closest to the stage for filming, which gave me good opportunities for a range of different shots, such as a close-up of a soloist singing from the opposite balcony, and wide shots of almost the whole stage. I thoroughly enjoyed recording the performance, and the teachers and students in charge of organising the filming, congratulated me on how well I did.
I have attached the video of the Showcase, and some photographs that I took of the dress rehearsals.
This was a performance by the Year 2 Performing Arts students, of the play 'And Then There Were None', followed by a performance of a contemporary dance project which addressed the complex themes of "conflict, consciousness and morality", choreographed by the Year 2 Dance students.
Again, I was situated at the Stage Left camera, which meant that, as I had worked from that position before, I had a better knowledge of what I could and could not achieve during the filming.
Unfortunately, I do not have access to the final recording, however, I have attached photographs of the programme, which includes my name, and a photograph of the dress rehearsal.
This was such a fun production to film, involving all of the Performing Arts and Dance students. I was personally requested to help out with this performance, and I was stationed in my usual spot, ready to go!
After having helped to record the dress rehearsal, and then watched the opening performance myself as an audience member, I was more aware of what shots I was keen to include when filming the subsequent performances. There was a certain moment during one of the songs that I wanted to capture, from front of Stage-Right, and I also wanted some wide shots of the incredible dance numbers.
Sadly, I do not possess any footage of the filmed production, however, I have included a photograph of the programme, and the stage before watching the performance myself.
