For the second year, we have 4 modules to complete: Filmmaker, Imperfect Cinema, Cinematic Crafts and Common Challenge: Professional Filmmaker. The coursework from which will now count towards my final degree grade.
This first project of the second year had to be a 3-6 minute piece. Having been inspired by the one-shot camera technique used in the 2025 Netflix TV series 'Adolescence', I was keen to attempt to film it in one-shot. Therefore, I used trained actors to maintain a good quality of performance; Lillian Seddon is studying a Drama course at the University, and Lawton Blomfield is an actor that I have worked with on projects outside the University, and who agreed to perform on this project for me.
I was awarded a 2:1.
Instead of a written piece of work summerising the semester's achievements, we were asked to submit a Video Essay instead. As well as my University work, I was also able to incorporate 2 projects that I had carried out in my own time; Firstly, I had accompanied a local Dance School as they performed on the MSC Virtuosa Cruise Ship on a week-long's Cruise of the Norweigan Fjords. I created promotional material for them, as well as filming all 4 live performances on the ship, so produced 7 reels in total for the group. Secondly, I worked as Focus Puller and 1st Assistant Camera on the Melissa McCusker film 'False Premises', which went on to be moninated for 'Best Drama - Short Film Category' at the 2005 UK Film Awards. I have now been given an IMDb profile as a Cinematographer on the back of this work.
An extra experience that I was able to cover in the Video Essay was my trip to the CamerImage International Film Festival in Poland, where I attended lectures, workshops and film screenings, as well as enjoying visiting the local area and sampling the Polish cuisine and culture of Torun.
I was awarded a 2:1.
The brief for this project was to create an 'Experimental Film'. Therefore, I decided to produce a film which is a 'kidnapping told in photographs...'. I took stills, then edited them to create the look that I want, and put them in order. I asked one of my course mates to create the music to accompany them.
I also had to create a video essay, going into what "Imperfect Cinema" is and one aspect of my film to analyse and reflect on.

This is the final group project of the second year. Our brief is to create a Documentary based on at least 1 of the UN Global Goals. I am working with 3 of my coursemates, and our working title is 'Life on Land' & 'Life Below Water'. We were able to interview a local fishery 'Sole of Discretion' regarding the current state and future hopes of sustainability and resources in the industry.
We had to also complete a verbal Presentation which was given at the end of the project, which results were included in a pdf document and critical reflective essay.
