The first year of my BA(Hons) Filmmaking degree consisted of 3 modules; Film School, Screen Dialogues, and Storyteller. The projects produced as part of this year's work do not count towards my final degree mark, but are purely awarded a Pass or Fail.
This was the very first project that we were set when I started at University. It was meant as an ice-breaker to the course; allowing us to explore Plymouth as a city, meet our coursemates, experiment with the equipment, and show what skills we had already acquired prior to starting the degree.
The brief was to create a "day in the life" video, about Plymouth. I collaborated with a fellow student, and we decided to add the extra element of 'circles' into our piece, to give it an added focus and theme.
At the end of our first Module, we were set the brief to make a short film of 90 secs-3 minutes in length. It could be based on anything, but the set details were to include an initial countdown at the start.
I decided to produce this as a solo project. I based it on the 2018 film 'Tag', and enlisted the help of some of my friends to be actors and crew members for me. As well as the film, I also had to complete a PDF of Evidence and a 1000-word essay. Although the marking system was only a Pass/Fail criterion, I was awarded a Pass and told that I was working at the level of a 2:1.
This was the project set at the end of the second Module. It had to be a 90 secs-3 minute film, with a narrative/essay theme. Again I chose to do a solo project, as I already had an idea for a storyline and script. I recast a couple of the male actors that I had used previously, but for the female lead I asked a girl whom I knew from the Plymouth University Dance Society. Some of my course-mates acted as crew members for me, and I was keen to use the 180-degree camera technique we'd learnt about in lectures.
As well as the film, I had to produce a PDF of Evidence and a 500 word essay. Again, it was just a Pass/Fail criterion, and I passed (no indication of grade was given this time though).
This was another end of Module project, and the final one of the first year. The brief was to create a film 3-6 minutes in length, but we were not allowed to use any typical cinematic effects during the piece. Therefore, we had to think outside-the-box to convey our storyline to the audience.
I worked in collaboration with 2 of my classmates, whom I had never worked with before. We all achieved a Pass, again with a 2:1 level indicated.
