Yoshi and Peach have identical stats. They both have the highest top speed, the best turn speed, and decent stats in everything else. They allow you to simply go faster than your opponents.

Toad is the exact same as Yoshi and Peach except he has 0.2 less weight so he is objectively worse as a character than the other two options.

Donkey Kong is a heavy character, so any other driver that runs into him will spin out. Donkey Kong has decent stats in comparison to the other heavy weights as he has more weights and less size. He doesn't have as much acceleration as Bowser, but you can argue that DK is better.

Bowser is a heavy character, so he can bump and spin out other racers. He has better stats than other heavies, his acceleration is good and his weight is great, at the cost of bigger size. Bowser is probably the optimal heavy character.

How to Drift
When racing, you might notice that drifting is a bit different in this game. You can Power Slide, like in Super Mario Kart by drifting in one direction and then hopping the opposite way to end your slide. The other way is the normal Mario Kart 64 drift. In order to perform a normal drift, you must hop in a direction to start it, then shake the controller back and forth to spark your wheels, you'll see this with the dust coming out the back. Then, release the button to boost forward.

In Mario Kart 64, there aren't much unlockables. The main one is extra mode. In order to unlock extra mode, you have to get the special cup gold trophy on 150cc. Then, you'll unlock extra mode. This allows you to play the game mirrored. Have fun with this new mode!

In Mario Kart 64, things are a bit different than in Super Mario Kart, one of these differences is the new and improved rival system. Previously, one character would simply be better because it had worse rivals to deal with. In Mario kart 64, it will randomly choose two opponents to be better than the rest, thus your rivals.
