Welcome St John the Baptist Family!
September 17 - Grades 6, 7, 8, 9
Parents,
At your baptism you were given the gift of faith. At your child’s baptism he or she was given the gift of faith. The gift of the Catholic faith has been passed down for generations and generations. We can and should nurture this gift given to us by God, and we should nurture the gift of faith given to our children by raising them to know, love, and serve The Lord. As parents, it is our right and duty to teach our children the Catholic faith.
Once per month, the online lesson will consist of a different element of our faith; it could be a Catholic tradition, a fact about our faith, from the Bible, from our Catholic Catechism, or a Catholic belief. All lessons will expand on that topic so that you will enjoy the beauty and richness of our Catholic faith.
Let's look at a short explanation about
Catholicism
Of the more than 7 billion people in the world, there are over 1.3 billion Catholics worldwide.
Catholics all over the world are united in the Body of Christ - in common belief, morality, and worship.
At the heart of this unity is Christ, with a visible government of bishops and the Pope.
God calls on different people to portray variety of roles in the Church. Each role that one performs is important for the church to grow. These leaders as well as members of the Church who are given the same mission of spreading the Good news of Salvation offered by God in Jesus. The Spirit of God guides the leaders and members of the Church as they fulfill their priestly, prophetic and kingly roles.
In the Catholic Church the Hierarchy is like a table that shows the power or the most important of the people in the Catholic community.
Let's look at an explanation of The Hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church. (please note this video was made during Pope Frances' papacy).
Complete the sheet and bring your answers to class.
This month we celebrate two Feast Days about Mary.
September 8 - Mother Mary has a birthday just like the rest of us. What a realization to remember that she is a very human woman who was born and lived an ordinary life until she met up with the angel Gabriel.
September 15 - Our Mother of Sorrows The feast of Our Mother of Sorrows reminds us of Mary's enormous grief. She is seen on this feast as the Mary of the Pieta holding the body of Jesus.
Let's pray by reading a scripture passage:
Matthew 16: 13-20
Peter’s Confession About Jesus.*
13 When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi* he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist,* others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
16 Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
17 Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood* has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.
18 And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church,* and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
19 I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.* Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
20 Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Messiah.
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
What does the verse "you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church" mean to you?
Bring your answers to the activity to class next week.
See you then!
