Welcome St John the Baptist Family!

Grades 3, 4, and 5
Parents,
At your baptism you were given the gift of faith. At your child’s baptism he or she was given the gift of faith. The gift of the Catholic faith has been passed down for generations and generations. We can and should nurture this gift given to us by God, and we should nurture the gift of faith given to our children by raising them to know, love, and serve The Lord. As parents, it is our right and duty to teach our children the Catholic faith.
Once per month, the online lesson will consist of a different element of our faith; it could be a Catholic tradition, a fact about our faith, from the Bible, from our Catholic Catechism, or a Catholic belief. All lessons will expand on that topic so that you will enjoy the beauty and richness of our Catholic faith.
Let's look at a short explanation about
Catholicism
Of the more than 7 billion people in the world, there are over 1.3 billion Catholics worldwide.
Watch the video. Then read a description of these beliefs.
These basic beliefs (principal truths of faith) are summarized in the creeds - Apostles' Creed, Nicene Creed, and Athanasian Creed.
TRINITY - one God in three divine persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
INCARNATION - true God becoming truly human in the person of Christ.
BIBLE - a collection of sacred writings
GRACE - God's friendship given through Christ, communicated by the Holy Spirit. Grace is necessary for salvation.
SALVATION - deliverance from sin and its punishment- by grace of Christ's sacrifice- and eternal life with God after earthly death.
MARY - the Virgin Mother of Christ and mother of the Church. She was conceived without original sin.
CHURCH - the people of God, baptized in Christ Jesus and guided by the Holy Spirit.
POPE- visible head of the Church, and successor to St. Peter.
SAINTS -people of extraordinary holiness who have joined God. They are often asked to intercede in prayer for people on earth.
SIN - original or actual sin. Original sin is the inherited sin of the human race. Actual sins are deliberate acts in violation of God's law, by thought, word, or deed. Actual sins are either mortal (fully deliberate and serious) or venial (less deliberate and of less importance).
HEAVEN - one's life in God after death, a state of supreme happiness in which one enjoys God face-to-face.
HELL - the result of one's refusing God's friendship, a permanent exile from God.
FAITH - belief in God's words, works, and goodness. Believing and obeying, knowing that full understanding is given only when one finally enters heaven.
PURGATORY- a state after death in which souls who did not make up for falling short of God's commands during their lifetime on earth are purified.
10 COMMANDMENTS - guidelines for living a moral and just life.
HOPE- seeing good in spite of evil- expecting eternal life even in the face of death. God wills salvation and gives one the means to attain it.
LOVE - love of God and each other, because everyone belongs to God.
JUDGMENT- Jesus Christ's evaluation of one's openness to Him and one's decision about Him, based on the life one lives.
The Apostles’ Creed remains a vital aspect of the Catholic faith, helping us remember what we truly believe in.
it helps define the truth and beliefs of Catholics.
it unites Catholics with genuine bonds, as we understand that we all believe in the same truth and value the Gospel of God.
it helps teach children and new believers how to live a life in His light and pursue a life of faith.
and, it helps us praise God and His teachings.
Fill in the circles with things you learned from the Apostles' Creed that you can say "yes" you believe in these things.
This month we celebrate two Feast Days about Mary.
September 8 - Mother Mary has a birthday just like the rest of us. What a realization to remember that she is a very human woman who was born and lived an ordinary life until she met up with the angel Gabriel.
September 15 - Our Mother of Sorrows The feast of Our Mother of Sorrows reminds us of Mary's enormous grief. She is seen on this feast as the Mary of the Pieta holding the body of Jesus
Why do you think the Apostles' Creed is important?
Bring your answers to the Yes I Believe sheet to class next week.
See you then!
