Toombul station opened in circa 1901. The North Coast line was electrified to Northgate in 1982 and as a result in the increase of patronage as a result of electrification resulted in the quadruplication to Northgate in 1996. Toombul was named after the former shire council with the same name. It gets it's name from an aboriginal expression referring to a place of hoop pines.
Toombul station has four platforms consisting of two island platforms. Platforms one and two are for Shorncliffe line services and platforms three and four are not in use as they were for Caboolture and Sunshine Coast line services which from 4 October 2016 are now running express from Petrie to Bowen Hills stopping only at Northgate and Eagle Junction coinciding with the opening of the Redcliffe Peninsula Line opening which don't stop at Toombul either. Redcliffe Peninsula line trains serve all stations from Petrie to Northgate.
Toombul station has two entrances. One on the eastern side at Parkland Street off Sandgate Road and one on the westen side at Collins Street.
Toombul does have disability access.
There is a bus interchange across Sandgate Road at the nearby shopping centre. The connecting bus services are 300, 301, 306, 307, 308, 310, 322, 326, 327, 369, 590, 598 and 599.
