Sandgate station opened in 1882 as Sandgate Central when the line first opened which it was renamed in 1938 when the former Sandgate station was renamed Shorncliffe. The line was duplicated in December 1901. The line was electrified on 18 September 1982.
Sandgate was named after the homonymous suburb of Sandgate which was named after the town in Kent, England.
