Petrie station opened as North Pine in 1888 after the nearby river. It was renamed in 1910 after Tom Petrie, an early settler in the area. In 1917 the line was duplicated from Northgate to Caboolture resulting in two extra platforms being created. On 23 April 1983, the line was electified from Northgate to Petrie and from Petrie to Caboolture on 28 June 1986. This resulted in the railway line being realligned between Petrie and Narangba. In the beginning of 2016 the fourth and fifth platforms were created and on 3 October 2016 the Redcliffe Peninsula line opened.
Petrie station has five platforms comprising of two island platforms and a side platform. Caboolture, Nambour and Gympie North services depart from platform two; Kippa-Ring services depart from platform three; Roma Street, Ipswich and Springfield Central services depart from platforms four and five. There are no scheduled services that depart from platform one as it is a backup platform in the event of a platform closure as a result of trackwork.
Petrie station has two station entrances on Saunders Street and Phillips Lane.
Petrie station does have disability access.
There is a bus stop outside the station on Saunders Street serving nearby suburbs. The routes that serve Petrie station are 680 and 686.
