Podiatric physician Selin Sakarcan is working on establishing a nonprofit in New Haven, Connecticut, called Back On My Feet. In this blog, she shares what people can do to keep their feet in the best condition even as they age.
Make sure the feet are always clean and dry
Damp and dirty feet can easily attract bacteria that might cause damage and discomfort to the feet. Before putting on footwear, make sure to dry the feet and shake off the dirt that might have settled. Wearing socks and stockings while the feet are damp might trap more moisture that can cause an unpleasant smell and make the feet prone to fungal infection.
Wear shoes that fit well
Selin Sakarcan advises people to wear shoes that have the right fit. More than the style, it should be functional and should preserve the form of the feet. When it comes to choosing shoes, it's important to find the most suitable comfort and support level. When wearing shoes, one should feel that there's enough room for the toes and the ankle. The sole of the shoe should also be able to withstand many hours of use.
Let the feet breathe
After a long day of wearing shoes, it's only right to let the feet breathe. Stretching the toes, putting the feet up, and giving them some gentle massages are some ways to relax the feet, especially before bed. Wearing shoes with breathable materials such as leather and mesh will allow the feet to stay dry and in good shape even after a long time.
Sakarcan is a podiatric physician, medical resident, and foot and ankle surgeon. She was recently accepted to the Harvard Macy Institute for the 2020 Program for Postgraduate Trainees: Future Academic Clinician Educators.
