Roads are some of the lesser popular architectural projects. They can never be as flashy as the Burj Khalifa or as elegant as Sydney Opera House. Roads are simply flat concrete surfaces built to help people go from one place to another. But according to architecture expert Reddy Kancharla, roads have to be looked at differently to appreciate them. While looking at a flat segment of road won’t amount to much, it’s learning the intricate networks of roads that help create a bigger picture. Some roads cross entire continents while others are just astonishing in how the entire network was built. Here are some examples of the longest roads and highways in the world.
Highway 10
Measuring 160 miles long, Saudi Arabia’s Highway 10 isn’t the longest stretch of road in the country. What it’s known for is being the longest straight road in the world. It eclipsed Australia’s Eyre Highway by over 60 miles. This route begins at Haradh and ends in Al Batha.
Pan American Highway
The Pan American Highway is one of the longest roads in the world, spanning a distance of 10,000 to 30,000 miles depending on your resources, as some would include or exclude certain roads from this route. This Highway stretches all the way from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska to the very southern tip of Argentina.
Highway 1
While Australia no longer has the record for the longest straight road in the world, its Highway 1 still boasts being one of the largest road network in a single country. According to Reddy Kancharla, Highway 1 connects all of Australia’s major cities along its 9,000-mile length.
Reddy Kancharla has extensive knowledge of engineering theories, principles, and practical solutions of engineering problems relating to civil engineering and the construction industry, and the development of quality systems in the construction industry per various codes and standards.
