Running is one of the best ways to stay physically active. But with safety protocols in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it might be challenging to train for a marathon or even for personal progress. Podiatric physician and regular marathon runner Selin Sakarcan shares practical tips to help runners of all levels workout safely in this new setup.
Keep a safe distance from other runners
Many places allow people to go out of their homes briefly for exercise. However, the danger is in the possibility of crowding. For those who want to train safely during these times, it’s important to keep their distance from other runners. Learning how to communicate with hand signals will prevent direct encounters with others on the path.
Try virtual training
Going out to train might not be the best option for many folks, even if it’s allowed. Getting on the treadmill or hitting in the required miles while running in the backyard is the next best move for avid runners. What’s important is to keep track of the time and the miles while doing the exercise. For regular marathon runners like Selin Sakarcan, being armed with the skills and running techniques will keep them in shape even if they can’t go out of the house. Training with fellow runners online is also a good alternative to group running.
Track the session
This is especially required for those who choose to run outdoors. Keeping track of the miles and the path is also necessary for safety reasons. During a run, a runner needs to avoid crowded areas. Checking apps will help a runner change their direction or even cut their run short.
