Create a 3D Exploration Level blockout in Unity 6 based on Multiplayer. Research similar titles and document the design process. Undertake user testing and provide insight on how you would iterative.
I wanted to establish some things before I began to research so that I had a more defined scope.
I wanted to design with Split Screen coop in mind rather than online Multiplayer
I wanted to explore a hybrid approach to having players be in the same space or seperated.
I wanted the puzzles to tie into level in a non-linear way.
Having researched games that fit my proposed Idea from the pre-production stage I took inspiration from It Takes Two's Into level's use of buttons and levers. I took inspiration from BIPED for its clear and linear level design as well as its character design. I also took inspiration from Lego Star Wars The Complete Saga for its use of specific characer interaction with level progression.
After researching these games and levels I was able to create a synopsis for the type of experience to expect from the level:
An open environment co-op puzzle platformer where players must solve three puzzles in any order. One controls a Square while the other controls a rectangle, working together with their differences to complete the level.
Firstly, I created a rough sketch for the level idea:
Using the Image above as an Image reference object in blender I quickly sketched out the area and imported it into my Unity Project.
Then I created a Split screen system where two players control two different player types using Unitys Input System
Of course implement on the user testing feedback so that the level can be improved on. I would also like to delve deeper into the split screen mechanics so that its more optimised towards the type of gamefeel I want to achieve, and also make it so it can be played with two controllers. I also want to shift the design to look at player pathing as the current version feels like the intended order of puzzles isnt being designed around
