The United Nations Development Account (UNDA) project 1819Q entitled "towards coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)" (2018-2021) aims to strengthen the capacity of national institutions of four countries (Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Colombia and Guyana) for the coherent and integrated implementation and monitoring of the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Science Division is leading the statistical component and the pilot testing of the SDG 17.14.1 methodology component of this project for which only Bangladesh, Burkina Faso and Guyana are covered. The relevant project activities are to:
Provide technical support to national statistical offices for mapping relevant indicators;
Conduct a data user-producer workshop to bring together key stakeholders with statisticians and data producers.
Provide technical support and tools on how to integrate environment statistics, including SDG and MEA indicators, into the monitoring and evaluation of national policy.
Additionally, Science Division is supporting the implementation of the other activities, in particular by ensuring that SDG 17.14.1 on policy coherence and the statistical work is included in the approach to providing technical support to review and develop policies or strategies, and support relevant national institutions to address existing gaps and the inter-regional workshop to share lessons and experiences which will be organized in 2021.
However, with co-financing from the Law Division we were able to expand the pilot testing of SDG 17.14.1 to Kenya and Tanzania. The project document and 2019 annual report are here. The inception workshop for this project was postponed due to a change in the project approach in Bangladesh and the need to align with UN Country Team activities. However, the statistical component of the project proceeded with a national training and the development of a national strategy on environment statistics. This workshop was conducted in October 2019. This environment statistics strategy will contribute to the broader approach to providing technical support to Bangladesh to improve their environmental policy landscape.
Capacity building on SDG 17.14.1 is still included as part of the proposed project and is planned for later in 2020 or 2021 in a workshop being planned by the UNEP Asia-Pacific Office under this project.

In Burkina Faso, statistics was integrated in the inception workshop in May 2019. The May 2019 was also used to introduce the SDG 17.14.1 methodology. A follow up workshop which was used to develop a strategy for environment statistics and to finish the pilot test of SDG 17.14.1 was conducted in October 2019.
Based on the feedback from the country, Burkina Faso would like to continue to focus on statistics in the other aspects of the project. Two future activities were agreed to take this work forward (with funding from the UNEP Africa Office component of this project) these include:
Hiring a national consultant to conduct a more detailed review of geospatial data sources for the SDGs (see the draft TOR).
Conducting an additional workshop with the national consultant to discuss the findings.

In Guyana, a national consultant working for the UNEP LAC Office produced a data report to initiate the project. The report noted that Guyana is just starting to develop an environment statistics system. This fed into the development of a national workshop which covered environment statistics in February 2019. A strategy for environment statistics was developed and presented to a workshop on statistics in August 2019. SDG 17.14.1 was also piloted in August 2019.
This work has fed into strengthening the monitoring of Guyana's Green State Development Strategy and is contributing to the completion of the project in Guyana. No further statistical activities are planned in Guyana.

In Kenya and Tanzania a pilot of SDG 17.14.1 was completed in January 2020.
No further statistical activities are planned in Kenya or Tanzania under this project. However, Tanzania is part of another project on environment statistics and Kenya is part of a project on marine litter data and another project on gender-environment statistics.
