Sound management of e-waste and waste is an essential component of sustainable development. Not only does waste management underlie many of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets, but there are two indicators specifically aimed at waste which include e-waste statistics as a sub-indicator under SDG 12.4.2 hazardous waste and 12.5.1 on recycling.
Unfortunately, there is a lack of nationally compiled data for the waste related indicators in Central Asia. In this context, UNU and UNEP are jointly implementing a project funded by the German Environment Agency (UBA), entitled “Regional E-Waste Monitor: Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) plus Georgia, Turkmenistan and Ukraine” which aims to build the capacity and e-waste data availability in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
This project includes national data collection, e-waste and waste related trainings and the final production of an e-waste Monitor will constitute a comprehensive, consolidated, and integrated report featuring a summary of e-waste and waste data and policy messages for the region. It is intended to serve as an important country-owned document to inform policy-making.
This project includes the following activites:
Regional workshops
Reaching out to countries to collect data, including using the UNSD/UNEP questionnaires and the pre-filled e-waste questionnaires for each country.
Developing a compiled set of data based on the best available data from countries on e-waste and waste which can inform SDG reporting.
Producing a summary report on the findings of the challenges and gaps in terms of collecting the data and potential recommendations for filling these gaps.
Providing inputs Regional E-Waste Monitor which is being developed under this project.
UNEP, in colloration with UNU, hired a regional consultant to manage the project from UNEP's Sub-Regional Office in Kazakhstan to lead the work on this project.

The first regional workshop was conducted in Moscow in January 2020 at the UNEP Moscow Office. This workshop provided a starting point for building national capacities to identify national data on EEE and E-waste as well as waste; provided training on statistical methods; and outlined the path toward developing national roadmaps to produce the e-Waste monitor using E-waste and waste statistics;, including identifying gaps and needs in the region.
The second workshop will provide additional training and serve as a validation workshop for the data compilation and reporting which is being conducted by the Regional Project Manager (Олег Печенюк (Oleg)). This workshop is being organized in collaboration with the Belarus Statistical Office (BelStat) in Minsk. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the second workshop will either be held:
1) In person during the week of 2 November
2) Virtually during the week of 2 November, with an additional follow up training in Q1 2021
