The Forsyth family lives in the hillside. The women are most likely folk healers (hill witches).
Presumably the Tremaine family owns farmland and a homestead in the region that will become Scarlet Hollow prior to Silas Scarlet's arrival in 1841. However, this is unclear. At an unknown point in the future (most likely 1910s-1970s), the family splits into the Tremaines and Calloways, each taking half of the land.
Silas Scarlet is born to Colonel Everett J. Scarlet in eastern North Carolina.
Silas Scarlet joins the Army. He rises quickly through the ranks, displaying a particular ruthlessness that leads to the nickname "Bloody" Scarlet.

The federal government grants Silas Scarlet a tract of bounty land in the North Carolina hills.
Silas and his wife, Mary Joseph, settle on the land and build a log cabin. The couple eventually has eight children, including Andrew Jackson, Hiram, William, and Alexandria.
For years, Silas Scarlet makes money through timber farming.
At some point in the 1850s, Silas discovers a seam of coal underground. He buys the entire hillside region at a discount and builds the Scarlet Coal Mines.
