Silas Scarlet had the Hiram Scarlet Memorial Hospital constructed during the U.S. Civil War. He named it after his eldest son, Hiram, who had died in the war along with Silas's unnamed second-eldest son.
In the late 19th century, the hospital received an addition and opened as a "Change of Air Clinic," attracting patients and prestigious clientele from around the world. Scarlet Hollow became a popular tourist destination.
Around 1918, after the mine collapse, most of the hospital was sealed off. The clinic remains, operating as a doctor's office.
Currently, Dr. Joan Kelly serves as town doctor.
