Charles Shaw was Enoch Scarlet's partner for the first few years that Enoch was in charge of the Scarlet Coal Mines (1914-1918).
During construction of the Shaw Mine, Charles warned Enoch about the substandard wood being used for construction. Enoch refused to wait for a shipment of better materials. In 1918, the Shaw Mine collapsed. Charles was blamed for the collapse and run out of town on a rail. His wife and his son, Charlie Jr., were chased from town by an angry mob.
After being exiled from Scarlet Hollow, Charles became an alcoholic. His wife eventually left him. When Charlie Jr. visited Charles on his deathbed, Charles asked Charlie Jr. to return to Scarlet Hollow and reveal the truth about the mine collapse.
