Ticks are a risk to living in New Hampshire. Children are advised to wear long pants and tall socks, tucking the socks into the pants. Repellents such as Hazel Moon are encouraged. Permethrin is suggested for outer layers that do not come into contact with skin. Tick checks will happen spring through fall during transitions. Crawling ticks will be added to the alcohol jar in the first aid backpack. Attached or engorged ticks will be removed properly, put into labeled and dated containers and saved for parents. An incident report will be filled out to include location of tick bite and parents will be contacted, provided with tick to be tested if they so choose and guidelines for how to monitor for tick borne illnesses. Parents must conduct more thorough checks at the end of the school day and it is suggested to check again at bath time or bedtime. Information on safe removal of ticks can be found at www.tickbitepreventionweek.org/tick-removal.Â
