When a rootling is created, their lumesse grants them earthen gifts. Plants, minerals, and other natural substances will merge with the rootling's bodies and become a part of their forms.
Things that Exist in Our World
Earthen gifts obtained upon first creation may be any naturally occuring material found in nature without human intervention. This includes but is not limited to rock, crystal, plant, bone, soil, and fungi. Elements such as fire, water, lightning, and wind are exceptions. These hold greater power and must be earned through practicing with it. There are story prompts dedicated to earning elemental powers. Earthen gifts may not be any bodily material found in living creatures besides bone.
Things Imagined by the Player
The natural features of rootlings are not limited to things that exist in our world! Lumesse affects rootling bodies in creative ways, therefore, the earthen gifts can be new, creative things that a player chooses to design. Players may dramatize existing flora be more fantastical in appearance. The player might write up an entire lore and purpose for this feature, or leave it a mystery. In the spirit of the game, we ask that players take care with designing imagined earthen gifts. They should still give the impression of being naturally occuring materials.
If you are designing an imagined earthen gift, we encourage you to create an identification guide for it. Where does it appear in nature? What causes it? What hurts it?
Altered Gifts
Rootlings who have formed a human alliance may take on a new earthen gift, or change an existing one, to a form influenced by human craft. For example, a rootling bearing clay may aquire stoneware. A rootling with pigmented plants make aquire ink.
Coverage
Earthen gifts can cover as much or as little of the body as the player wants so long as the eyes are visible and at least two stem animal features can be distinguished.
If the rootling's body is made up of mostly earthen gifts it must resemble the silhouette of its stem animals whilst being constructed of other materials.
Geographical Effects
Some specific natural substances can only be found in certain regions of the world. However, this does not limit the rootling magic. A rootling may have its coronation, or temple birth, in one part of the world, but receive an earthen gift from across the globe. Sometimes the rootling will feel a deep need to seek out the natural location of this treasure and make its home there.
Personality
The earthen gifts may be seen by the rootlings as mere decoration, or sentient beings. Although this does not affect the design, the Rootling's perception of itself is up to the player. Rootlings will sometimes form very strong attachments and ideas about their gifts. The way they act, think, feel, and the places they go might be governed by what they believe about their gift.
If the rootling has its own personal goals, the earthen gift may clash with it. The earthen gift may act as a guide that your rootling decides to build its life around. Even still, the rootling may ignore its earthen gifts altogether.
Earthen gifts can present challenges to be overcome. How do your rootling's gifts play into its story?
