Rootlings and Their World
Rootlings and Their World
Guarding the sacred magic
Rootlings are an animalistic fantasy species with nature and magic at their core. They are characters that can be grown and developed through visual arts, writing, and player collaborations. The Rootlings ARPG rewards players with points for being creators of art. Lumesse Points will allow your character to progress through the game. This art roleplay game is built for encouraging creative freedom and the development of friendships within a community of artists.
Core Design Elements
They appear in the likeness of living creatures of the earth, all living creatures besides humans are included.
- Rootlings all share their swooping narrow eye shape, as well as their bright eye markings. These eye markings can be white, cream, or another pale color as long as it stands out and contrasts the other values on the face.
- Each one is filled with lumesse magic that can be represented as a hovering flame or a glow from within the body.
- Rootlings carry earthen gifts upon their bodies. Plants, minerals, and various organic materials will appear on their forms.
Lumesse fills their bodies in a similar form to liquid fire. Rootlings can choose when to and when not to display their lumesse flame.
The rootling species leaves a lot of room for creative freedom. It welcomes stylistic differences and new ideas.
- Rootlings are not limited to any one kind of animal. You may design with corals, microorganisms, insects, and characteristics of creatures from folklore- depending on the tier of your rootling's creation.
- Designs must be approved and added to the Bestiary before becoming official rootlings, but a basic starter character can be created by any new player with no prior requirements through gameplay.
Rootlings can find their origins in different places. While one rootling may have been created through an animal's coronation, another may be born in one of the elden root temples.
If a rootling is created through the process of a coronation, then its body may appear in a similar fashion to its original form. However, it may also draw in characteristics of another animal dwelling within the same ecosystem as the secondary stem animal. If a rootling is born from pure magic in a temple, however, then it may appear as a mix of species from anywhere on earth. Depending on how much lumesse is invested, more animals may be included in its design. Crowned rootlings will begin life at roughly the same size of their original forms, but rootlings born in a temple will begin as seedlings. Wee little critters to grow as their magic strengthens.
How to Begin
Welcome to Rootlings, we are glad you are here
Design Step by Step
For a coronation, choose two animals within the same ecosystem. Use features from both of them to create a new creature.
Ensure your rootling's eyes match the species' anatomy guidelines
Add naturally occuring materials to your rootling to be its earthen gifts according to the earthen gifts guide
Give your rootling a lumesse flame with a color that suits it.
Once your rootling has been designed you must decide on words you would like to use for its nature and homeland. These can be descriptive terms for its personality and what location in the world it originated from.
Empty Coronation Form: this is the form you will complete to submit your new rootling for gameplay.
Root: Coronation | Nature: What is its personality in one to three words? | Homeland: Where did it originate from? Species: Rootling | Designer: Who receives credit for the art and design?
Stem Creatures: What two animals influenced the design?
Earthen Gifts: What natural materials does it possess?
Accessories: If you completed an accessory quest with your coronation trial, what are you adding?
Lumesse: What color did it choose for its magic?
Obtaining Your First Rootling
If you are new to rootlings and you do not yet have your own character, this section is for you. New players can design their first rootling after completing one coronation trial through visual, written, or some other form of art.
If you already know which primary stem animal you'd like to use, you can complete the coronation trial before you've made your design.
You may connect with another player to have their existing rootling be the parent, or you may select an Elden Root to perform the coronation. When you are ready to design, please review the anatomy, lumesse, and earthen gifts guides to start building up your first character.
Once you have both your new rootling's design and a coronation trial completed you may submit them both together for review. Coronations may be submitted through this form.
After your rootling has been approved (congratulations!) and added to the bestiary, you can begin playing with it! Any art you make will be able to score lumesse points (LP) which can be tracked using a pre-made spreadsheet. You can begin your rootling's journey on your own, or you can join our Discord to connect with the community.
You have your first rootling, now what?
Your new rootling is more than a design, it is a character for you to grow and connect with. It has an entire story and journey waiting to be told, and only you are the one who can tell it. The more your rootling harbors lumesse, the more access it has to the world in which it dwells. What stories will you tell?
