Choose a general nonfiction book (scroll past the memoir books on the nonfiction book list).
*Get approval from Mrs. Schulz if the book you want to read is not on this list.
Part 1:
Part 2:
Choose one of the following essays to write (typed in MLA).
#1 Develop a topic/question which you might ask about the work you have read. The question should have some depth to write about, and it should relate to some matter that pleased or intrigued you about the work. Construct an essay that responds to your topic/question.
#2 From the work you read, choose an idea, a belief, or a theme which struck you as valuable or original in concept. Explain clearly the nature of this idea, belief, or theme and how it adds to the function of the work in a well-constructed essay.
#3 Choose one negative factor in the work that you have read. This factor may be an action, a belief, a setting, or the behavior of a character in the work. In your essay describe this factor and show why you found it negative or unacceptable.
You will read 350 pages in 4 weeks. You can choose from fiction, nonfiction, drama, poetry. You will create how you will interact with each text (e.g. annotate, blog, view, research, website, discussion, book club, create a new list based on a book you read that extends the learning). Consider how real people engage with real literature and art. Investigate and decide how you want your interaction(s) to look.
*Get approval from Mrs. Schulz if the memoir you want to read is not on this list.
Assignment Due October 3
Part 1 (do this assignment for one of your books) - Reader Response Journal: Your reader response journal must have FIVE entries. Each entry should include a quote from the book and a 300-word response (the quote doesn't count towards the 300 words). In your responses you will make one thematic connection and one personal connection.
Format:
Quote
Thematic connection (What is a theme in the book and how does the quote you selected connect to that theme?)
Personal connection
Part 2 (do this assignment for the other book) - Book Trailer
Create a book trailer. I recommend reading the same book as one or two other people in class so you can do the book trailer together as a pair or small group. More info on Teams Assignments.
Part 3 (you will choose which book to write your essay for once you see the prompt) - Essay: This will be done in class one day the week of October 6.
