Hush! Caution! Echoland! (For clarinet and electronics)

Program notes for the concert

Hush! Caution! Echoland! Is part of a body of works being developed from James Joyce’s text Finnegans Wake. These works explore processes to which Joyce’s text maybe use the creation of sound art. These processes include: the manipulation of computer-based recordings of text, interpretations of the text as a written document, responses to the text in collaborative sound art creation, and the effect of spatialization of recordings of the text in its interpretation.

This current version presented here is based on interpreting the ASCII values of the text in the creation of scores for the acoustic instruments. Here the performance is by Brigid Burke on clarinet, with Roger Alsop on electronics. The process used to generate the score all this performance has also been used to generate scores for other Instruments and instrumental groups and electronic systems.
