How to catch a tiger: November 18, 1985
The original strip for November 28, 1985, as it appeared in half of the newspapers.
The substituted strip for November 28, 1985.
One curious incident in the early publication of Calvin and Hobbes was that of the alternate strip. On November 28, 1985, only half of the syndicated newspapers published the original comic; the rest got an alternate strip. The original was never reprinted, whether in reruns, the first printed collection, the first treasury, or even The Complete Calvin and Hobbes; all of these feature the alternate strip instead. The original strip is actually the first to feature Hobbes in the washing machine.
The incident was not explained in any commentary by Watterson, interviews, or any other public disclosure by Andrews McMeel. The absence of the strip could be considered censorship, as with the altered comics of The Complete Calvin and Hobbes, designed to avoid controversy. In the original strip, Calvin joyfully anticipated going in the washing machine; the syndicate may have been afraid that young readers would imitate him and injure themselves.
British version: Panel 1, the UK version says "...horrible!" instead of "...like bat barf" in the US.
January 7, 1987: The dialogue was changed from "adopted" to "genetically engineered or cloned" because of concerns about comparing adoption to child labor. Curiously, it did not omit references to cannibalism and child labor.
genetically engineered or cloned (coming soon)
May 23, 1987: This strip is missing from Something Under the Bed Is Drooling.
It was reprinted in The Essential Calvin and Hobbes and The Complete Calvin and Hobbes.

November 24, 1987: In panel 2, orbit or tilt?
In The Complete Calvin and Hobbes, the strip features alternate dialogue. In the second panel, referring to Calvin's dad's explanation for why the weather seems to be getting colder. The dialogue was changed from
"He says it's colder because our hemisphere is tilted away from the sun now." to,
"He says it's colder because the Earth's orbit is taking us farther from the sun."
The new, alternate dialogue provides the correct scientific explanation for the existence of seasons like winter. The original dialogue reflects a commonly held but scientifically incorrect misconception.
tilt (coming soon)
November 25, 1988: The dialogue was changed in The Complete Calvin and Hobbes from "biological mother" to "a good mother"
"...a good mother" (coming soon)
January 26, 1990: Five clones were created. The foot of a sixth can be seen in frame 3.
"I think you're mom's going to be bothered." Can you spot the typo?
Thanks to Reddit for spotting this notable daily strip.
May 23, 1989 (original publish date)
June 7, 1994: Typo in panel 4. (Sabbatical 2)
The typo was published in the "Complete Calvin and Hobbes" (Volume #, page #)
On GoComics, the typo is fixed.
August 1, 1989: Hobbes recalls knowing Calvin during infant–3 years old. However, in the first strip Calvin appears to be 6-years old already.
