New: Fenimore Art Museum exhibition
Like most fans, I read Calvin and Hobbes as a young boy. My hometown is less than an hour away from Chagrin Falls, which means my childhood scenery was similar to Calvin's.
In December 2020, after nine months of quarantine, I needed some comfort. A warm blanket and an old friend, Calvin and Hobbes. Rereading a few choice sections and laughing with my children at the many adventures led me to a terrific idea, I should frame the last Sunday.
Peanuts was an inspiration to Bill Watterson and was a childhood favorite of mine. My parents had the final Peanuts strip and article matted and framed. It occurred to me, my favorite strip had not received the same honor. So off to eBay, I went.
Sadly, the marketplace is riddled with unauthorized products. The ripoff merchandise is enticing and yet out of respect for Watterson's denial of licensing, I vowed to never own unofficial products. I asked myself, what is the most official product, the newsprint strips - all of them.
While searching eBay for a copy of the last Sunday I came across a huge lot of Sunday strips and Daily strips. As I stared at the eBay listing I imagined a COMPLETE COLLECTION OF CALVIN AND HOBBES IN NEWSPRINT.
As of 11/1/2021, my journey is 95% complete.
Here is a spreadsheet of the dates needed to complete my collection.
If you can help, I would be grateful and can include your name as part of the journey, let me know.
This treasure hunt has been a lot of fun and I'd like to send out a special thanks to my 'collection crew' for all their help!
